Quando si dice volare alto: a settembre razzo amatoriale 'Powered by Linux'

Il prototipo, che verrà presentato a Usenix 2003, userà software open source - una versione compatta della distribuzione Linux Debian con kernel 2.4.20 ovunque possibile e RTLinux di FSMLabs per tutte le operazioni che necessitano di un sistema operativo real-time - e componenti hardware molto comuni:

"The group's latest rocket, set to launch this September, has an onboard computer comprised of an AMD 586 processor and a Jumptec MOPS/520 PC/104+ board -- basically, a modest 133 MHz PC on a four-by-four inch slab of plastic.



There's also a power supply, a PCMCIA card carrier for an 802.11b card to transmit data to the ground, and a carrier board for a 128-MB CompactFlash card for long-term storage."

Il razzo è opera di un gruppo di appassionati, la Portland State Aerospace Society, con sede presso il College of Engineering and Computer Science della Portland State University di Portland, Oregon.



L'orientamento pro-open source del gruppo traspare chiaramente dalle parole del suo leader, Andrew Greenberg:

"We're all about free software and open hardware," Greenberg said. "Everything we do is published on the Net. So many amateur groups don't publish their work. We think that's sad and a waste. We'd be years ahead if we knew technical details of other amateur projects."
