The design of an efficient kernel, which manages memory, computing tasks and disk drives, is crucial to an operating system's performance.

"Users will see a three- to five-percent performance increase in the same machine under the new software," said Charlie Ungashick, director of product marketing at Novell.

Linux is software that can be modified and copied freely, unlike proprietary software such as Windows. Companies such as Novell and Red Hat Inc. offer update and support services for Linux.

Because the new Linux kernel is more efficient, users' computers would be better able to handle multiple streams of audio and visual media, as well as use Linux with a wider variety of hardware, such as newer USB devices and 64-bit central processors.
