[Tech] I virus piu' recenti usati per frodi in commercio?

Secondo il produttore finlandese di anti-virus F-Secure, uno o più dei virus che recentemente hanno colpito migliaia di PC in tutto il mondo potrebbero essere impiegati per mettere online dei finti negozi di commercio elettronico, così da carpire agli ignari acquirenti le informazioni relative alla loro carta di credito.

"There is an operation of fake online shops running on infected home computers, which are being controlled by hackers or criminals," Mikko Hyppoenen, head of anti-virus research at Finland's F-Secure, told AFP on Monday.



"Currently there is an investigation going on, and we are trying to find out which viruses they are using. It could be any of the latest viruses, such as Bagle and Mydoom," he added.



Many of the recent bugs open a so-called back door on infected computers, giving their creators access to the contaminated machines without the owners' knowledge.



It was first believed that these back doors were mainly used to distribute spam, or unsolicited bulk e-mail advertisements, but in principle they could be used for all kinds of malicious purposes, including fraud, experts said.



"To run fake online stores on infected computers is one of the things a back door can be used for," Snorre Fagerland, virus analyst with Internet security firm Norman in Oslo, told AFP.



To avoid being traced, the websites move from computer to computer, leaving buyers with no other real information than the the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the infected machine that registered their credit card information.

Uno sviluppo preoccupante, ma non una novità in assoluto: da sempre esistono persone o gruppi che cercano di trarre profitto da situazioni simili; il fatto preoccupante è che oggi qualcuno ha trovato il modo di sfruttare le vulnerabilità di Windows rispetto ai worm virus per trasformare in un colpo solo migliaia di PC in collettori di numeri di carta di credito - decisamente un grosso salto non solo qualitativo ma anche quantitativo rispetto al passato.
