Hong Kong chiede piu' democrazia alla Cina

Non si può certo dire che a Hong Kong amino perdere tempo: il Capodanno era appena scoccato che già la città ha visto sfilare per le strade alcune decine di migliaia di manifestanti nella prima manifestazione politica del nuovo anno - e, come si dice? chi manifesta a Capodanno...

Thousands of people streamed through the streets of Hong Kong on New Year's Day to demand greater democracy in the biggest march since huge protests in July shocked local leaders and Beijing.



Shouting "We demand more democracy," "Return power to the People" and "One man, one vote," political activists, workers and families filed slowly from a park in the busy Causeway Bay shopping district toward government offices in central Hong Kong.



Before they set off, religious groups prayed that Hong Kong people would be allowed to elect their own leaders.



"We want full democracy -- the right to elect our own chief executive and all members of the Legislative Council," said Richard Tsoi, a spokesman for the organizers who also led the July 1 march, which drew half a million people into the streets.

La Cina nella nuova costituzione di Hong Kong aveva stabilito che entro il 2007 la città avrebbe eletto autonomamente il proprio leader e i propri legislatori, senza fornire però ulteriori dettagli in merito: evidentemente i segnali arrivati finora dall'amministrazione "imperiale" cinese non sono incoraggianti, e hanno spinto i cittadini a rompere gli indugi.
