[Tech] Il Washington Post: 'Microsoft Windows: Insecure by Design'

Un articolo sul Washington Post fa dei confronti decisamente imbarazzanti (per Microsoft) fra Windows XP, Mac OS X e Linux e spiega come mai Windows risulta così vulnerabile rispetto agli altri due sistemi operativi.

Between the Blaster worm and the Sobig virus, it's been a long two weeks for Windows users. But nobody with a Mac or a Linux PC has had to lose a moment of sleep over these outbreaks -- just like in earlier "malware" epidemics. This is not a coincidence.

Relativamente alla sicurezza, il Washington Post paragona Windows XP a un'automobile parcheggiata in un quartiere malfamato della città, con le portiere aperte, la chiave nel blocchetto d'accensione e un Post-It sul cruscotto che recita "Per favore, non rubatela":

Even if that changed, Windows would still be an easier target. In its default setup, Windows XP on the Internet amounts to a car parked in a bad part of town, with the doors unlocked, the key in the ignition and a Post-It note on the dashboard saying, "Please don't steal this."

L'articolo prosegue confrontando il modo in cui Windows XP, Mac OS X e Linux affrontano problematiche quali la gestione delle "porte" del PC e dei relativi servizi "in ascolto" (ad esempio, The Remote Procedure Call feature exploited by Blaster is, -- to quote a Microsoft advisory, -- not intended to be used in hostile environments such as the Internet.: ma allora, di grazia, perchè attivarla per default? In comparison, Mac OS X ships with zero ports open to the Internet.), la gestione del firewall (inizialmente inattivo, sic, in Win XP) e degli aggiornamenti (in particolare Windows Update) e le modalità di utilizzo dei PC (l'accesso come "administrator", gestito da Win XP in maniera molto meno sicura che sotto OS X o Linux).
