[Tech] Anche il virus Nachi sta combinando disastri

In teoria il worm virus Nachi doveva essere una variante "buona" di MS Blast, immessa in Rete allo scopo di "vaccinare" i computer vulnerabili al virus MS Blast originale.



In realtà, per fare questo Nachi - identificato anche come MS Blast.D e Welchia - esegue un volume particolarmente elevato di operazioni, col risultato di produrre spesso più danni del virus che tenta di combattere:

The worm aimed to patch vulnerable computers before the original MSBlast infected them, but its aggressive scanning for systems disrupted corporate networks.

E ancora:

MSBlast and its variants, and the Sobig.F virus, have disrupted several companies, including those responsible for critical parts of the United States' infrastructure.



- Defense contractor Lockheed Martin had less than 1 percent of its systems infected, but still had disruptions.



- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology found its e-mail servers congested from the amount of messages created.



- Railway and freight hauler CSX had to stop trains because of the Nachi worm, the Associated Press reported.



- Airline Air Canada canceled flights on Tuesday because its network couldn't deal with the amount of traffic generated by the Nachi worm.



- The Pentagon and military had myriad infections of the Sobig.F virus and the Nachi worm, various news agencies reported.

Il virus MS Blast (chiamato amche Lovesan / Lovsan) e le sue varianti, fra cui lo stesso MS Blast.D / Nachi / Welchia, sfrutta una vulnerabilità segnalata da tempo da Microsoft, che aveva anche messo subito a disposizione una patch raccomandandone l'installazione ai suoi utenti.



Evidentemente molti utenti Microsoft, o per pigrizia o perchè privi delle conoscenze minime necessarie per affrontare correttamente questo tipo di problemi, non hanno applicato con la necessaria tempestività la patch: in effetti, sono stati i migliori alleati del virus.



Se tutti avessero adottato per tempo le necessarie contromisure, la diffusione di questo come di altri worm virus sarebbe risultata certamente molto più circoscritta.
